Hi kids,

I hope you have a great summer! Graduation was very nice tonight. Thanks Zimmerman fam for my new sherpa...I love it! Tomorrow we will have a little bbq and 1st birthday party for my little honey bunches of love, little Will. If you want to crash the party between 12pm and 3pm or so, let me know! It will be at my husband's parents' house in Ahwatukee.
My email is tml90028@aol.com... or if you want, text me at 818-633-1015.
I will be in L.A. June 2-9, but then I should be here in Tempe for a few more weeks. Who knows though... I'm going with the summer flow, in terms of the move to Cali.

Love Math.

HW: Study for your final!

FINALS next week!

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

HW: finish and study 10-5 on areas of regular polygons.
If you are done, then study the names of solids and look at sections 11-2 and 11-3.

Today: We went over 10-5 problems.
I talked about the 5 types of solids you should know: prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres. Assume they are not oblique- meaning, leaning or slanted. So, the lateral faces of a prism make right angles with the bases.

Tomorrow: surface area and volume.

I should have a little final study guide soon.

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

HW: Pg784 lesson 10-5 only, #1-8 all, try your best!

Today we went over the special formula for the area of equilateral triangles and the area of regular polygons. We also went over problems from sections 10-3, 10-4 and 10-5.

We will skip some lessons between 10-3 and 11-8, so wait for me to tell you which ones tomorrow.

Monday, May 16, 2011

HW: See page 908 for a list of area formulas. Try your best to work out the areas for problems: Page 783 lesson 10-3 #1-5 AND lesson 10-4 #1-6. Draw the diagrams! Show the work.

TODAY: we talked about finals, our schedule this week, and collected the HW.

I will post more details about finals and this week later....

Friday 5/13/2011

HW: Finish #1-10 on handout "10-1 study guide", read the section too.

Today: talked about the 10-1 polygon activity from yesterday.

HW: Construction of a regular decagon!!

TODAY: I don't have your tests graded yet...but hopefully soon. I managed to give back some graded HW though- ya!

Today's activity involved many areas of math. We discussed the definition of regular polygons and then proceeded to investigate a few obvious properties of the regular decagon if it were inscribed in a circle. We drew the radii (segments from the center of the circle to the vertices of the decagon) of the decagon. We investigated one of those isosceles triangles.
It turns out that if the circle had a radius of 1 unit, then the side of the decagons would be equivalent to a very special number!!
We found this special length using the mentioned isosceles triangle, similar triangles, proportional side lengths, and the solution of a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula.

Then a nice construction with the compass and straightedge followed!!

All the steps are on the new handout from today!!
TRY the construction all over again on your own at home.
Good luck.

HW: none I guess

TODAY: TEST on chapter 9!

TOMORROW: BIOSPHERE!!!!!! woo-hoo!!!!!

Monday, May 9, 2011

HW: Finish your page 505 assignment AND study for your test!

TODAY: We went over problems from the HW as well as began our discussion about polygons.

CHAPTER 9 TEST on circles will cover: definitions, word problems, proofs, 16 theorems applications, and ?

You may use the sheet with all 16 theorems and diagrams on your test!! don't forget it :)

Prove the "party hat theorem" a.k.a. Two tangent segments to a circle from a common point outside the circle are congruent.

Friday, May 6, 2011

HW: same as yesterday...pg505 #1-42 all, 15 points, due Tuesday.

Review chapter 9!!!!!
NOTE: you may use the notes with the 16 theorems and diagrams on your test!!! If you forget, too bad. If you didn't hear the more than 1 announcements in class, too bad.

Test on Tuesday!!!

MONDAY: section 10-1 on Polygons.
